So what were some of the markedly stupid things that characters did in Death Note?

Anything that comes out of Misa's mouth tends to fall under that category.

Not really. What was stupid of the characters that did that? L died in a very intelligent play on Light's part. I'm thinking about the horrible "cost you serious" mistakes. Like Raye Penber's girlfriend not telling anyone else about her suspicions on the Kira case (though I could be wrong on this, since I haven't read all the way through the series yet).

Almost everything light did after L died. Over confidence kills.

Oh, and that guy I don't remember. The one that screwed up everything at the end.

Mikami for the blunder he did for trying to reassure Takada's death. Ehh, him being the killer for Light after erasing Misa's memory of the Death Note didn't really gave a spicy mix in the plot. Sure, it was fairly decent but not really "A-grade" good.

Mikami was an idiot for being overzealous... The whole anime kinda dropped off after L died, but that whole sequence was amazing to think about. And it's already been said, but overconfidence on Light's part was the nail in his coffin. But the anime had to end somehow, I guess.

*Claps* Probably the best anime I have seen yet.

His initial errors were his first killings. Even though he didn't really believed in the powers of the book and did it just for curiosity, he should at least have known the consequences: The verification of his identity as a japanese citizen.
Maybe it was just his arrogance, as some of you stated, but I guess the correct term is humaneness. If he "played" Kira like a god, creating and living a second identity, he would've been untraceable. At least that's my oppinion.

The Stupidest thing that I can think of is that Light decided to challenge L in the first place. Had he just stuck to writing names in the Death Note and minding his own business L wouldn't have had to many clues to go off of. It was when he retaliated against L that L got more clues to the identity of Kira which ultimately let near win.

Ya he should not have killed the fake L at the start of the show and also killing people in jail is stupid to he should just have killed random bad guys not in jail.

He killed the bad guys in jail because they can skip out on bail or get released early and...you know do bad stuff.

The point was to scare criminals without taking too much action, you know. I mean, did you even watch it properly? How can you kill a load of active criminals if you don't even know how they look? He was killing loads of prisoners to scare of the other people who are still actively doing crime.

And I do remember he killed the men who didn't have a chance to get out or something. I could be mistaken though.

Especially since fear is the best tool to manipulate the population into doing what you want. The only flaw to Light's character in the beginning was that he was easily suspect to bait. After the death of L, yeah, it was his overconfidence that screwed him over.

Especially since he chose a semi-independent individual to act as his proxy, Mikami. Mikami's actions were essentially the crucifixion of Light.

When Naomi showed up at the station and then walked off with Light.... uh... yeah.. the police officer that was there kinda shoulda mentioned a woman that was desperate to see the chief of police with information she considered important about the Kira case and was last seen walking off with Light Yagami before she vanished to police HQ.....

Yeah, Light shouldn't have killed the fake L. At the time he was still gonna kill just criminals, so some dude calling you out on TV didn't deserve to die.

Also, the reason Light killed crooks in jail was to find out the results of him trying out the various limits of the Death Note.

I loved seeing the evil evolution of Light after killing L.

But Missa was just like as my friends say epic fail.
