What's bigger than Gundam? The cost to make one. A real one. Science Portal, a site run by the Japan Science and Technology Agency, figured the price tag of a real Gundam would be around US$725,000,000 for parts and materials alone. That does not include the labor costs incurred in constructing the 60 foot tall, 43.7 metric ton robot. A breakdown of parts looks something like this:
Aluminum alloy (honeycomb) $79,000,000
(+ Metal manufacturing/processing) $240,000,000
Main computer (IBM) $1,550,000
Gas turbine engines (GE) $364,000,000
Superconductive motors (IHI) $7,800,000
Motor drivers $7,800,000
Reducers $22,800,000
Sensors $910,000
Cockpit $450,000
TOTAL: $724,310,000
Pricey! And even after that, the only thing this Gundam could do is walk — though, doing so would probably destruct the ground below it.
Shame it can only walk

That could work,if whole unit is stable enough.Otherwise after fire we will have couple of tons of steel giving in to the gravity.

Did you guys even read that story?
Some guy did not make a Gundam, that's merely the estimated price of one.

Better not, either we start WW III with new weapon race,or we never even see it,as it will be "secret weapon"
DarkPrinny

There will be no WW3

If you think about it, $725 million isn't that much. If you could get at least$10 from everyone you meet, you'd only need about 73 million people. Thats less than the population of the US (I think). Heck, China has over two billion. I bet Bill Gates secretly goes out every now and then to got battle the oil tycoons in giant mechs...

No weapons? An old RPK is like $100 in some places.

right now a mech would primarly be used as a seige weapon, but with the abundent use of rocket propelled explosives, a mech would be taken down quite easily

How very interesting, Just imagine what would happen if the U.S. got their
hands on it and have this as their secret weapon against Iraq in the war...
(Nanchatte! I doubt they're even competent enough. Jp is ahead of the U.S. :P )
Wonder if they'll ever make a real R9-A1 "Arrow Head" with a Wave Cannon, or a
actual Armored Core based off Wing Zero's model here?
Cross Clown
01-16-2008, 12:55:29 AM
I doubt it besides where are they going to develop it? Space?
Sai
01-16-2008, 12:57:51 AM
we can do it when i get to my own house.
and besides, olath may already have made one.

Their's still the problem of hiding it from the neighbors you know?
Sai
01-16-2008, 01:34:51 AM
nah, iz fine, iz fine.
You have giant robots, mechs, and other weopons of mass destruction. what can they do?
or even more; what can't you do?

These weapons are impractical for modern warefare. The enemy can issue a simple counterattack of an overwhelming force of fanboys.

it is impracticle to use as a weapon. i mean it's too damn big. you could see it coming from like a year away. it get hit by any and every weapon there was before it reached it's target.

01-17-2008, 12:56:38 AM
Yeah, and it would suck pretty much to see steel giant got owned by one little bastard hiding in bushes with EtE type portable rocket launcher aiming straight at center of pilots cockpit.

or some fool on an atv zipping in and aruond it's fett whith a steel cable. tember... crash, bang, thud. game over.

Since when did the idea of giant, humanoid mechs come from Star Wars?
kagomelover
01-17-2008, 01:12:49 AM
he's refering to the steel cable around the legs. besides that kinda proves my point.

01-17-2008, 01:12:52 AM
It's not about mech, but on how to make it fall...never saw old star wars?

01-17-2008, 01:29:40 AM
Noob.
Lol that would be funny
And nice reference, thats exactly whyd it would be impractical
AbatedDust
01-17-2008, 01:49:09 AM
True, a mech with legs only wouldn't stand a chance. This mech, however, has arms. It could grab the cable and pull the plane right out of the sky, or just rip the cables off itself.
Redemptor
01-17-2008, 01:51:36 AM
Only if it would be agile enough. From what we know, current tech level isn't allowing to make such precise movement mechanics for such giant.
kagomelover
01-17-2008, 01:55:05 AM
plus you gotta take current working technology. like f22 raptor. not only stealth but over the horisone capability.
